Global Stories, Global Citizens

Our kids are growing up in a world that is becoming increasingly interconnected every day. If we want to help them make sense of that world, we must teach them global citizenship.

However, you don’t become a global citizen by simply learning facts about other countries and cultures. You become a global citizen by learning to connect and relate to a diverse set of perspectives and experiences.

That’s the purpose of our Grade 1 Global Book Project. By reading books from as many different cultures as possible throughout the year, the students go on a trip around the world that exposes them to a huge range of global storytelling traditions.

They keep track of their reading by adding pins to a world map, a wonderful visual travelogue that also inspires them to seek out new countries to explore. This leads to discussions and activities about the countries themselves. Most importantly, they examine the differences and similarities amongst all the unique settings, characters and plots.

By the end of the year, a group of six- and seven-year-olds have had their eyes opened to a much wider world, all through the power of a simple storybook.
