Encouraging Dialogue: Speaker Series 2012 - Mental Health and Our Children

In January 2012 KCS held a Speakers Series featuring a panel discussion on the very important topic of children's mental health. The panelists, experts in this field, included:

Dr. David Goldbloom, Senior Medical Advisor, Education and Public Affairs at CAMH. Dr. Goldbloom also sits on the Mental Health Commission as Vice Chair. A compelling speaker, David, focused on mental health in general, addressing stigma, genetics, treatment and research while providing a general overview of this topic.

Taylor Armstrong, Staff Psychiatrist
at The George Hull Centre spoke about anxiety in children, depression, OCD, mental health diagnosis in children, along with the signs and symptoms to look for and where to go.

Shannon Stach, student at the University of Guelph
is a participant in a group called “The New Mentality” which is a part of Children’s Mental Health Ontario. This group engages young people who have faced a mental health issue in their own life to take on speaking engagements in the community. Shannon shared a powerful story of her own encounter with a mental health issue. Her strength and bravery brought the floor to their feet for a standing ovation.

Sarah Cannon, Executive Director, Parents for Children’s Mental Health
(a community based, charitable organization). Sarah Shared with us her own journey as a parent dealing with a mental health issue in her family, and spoke to us in particular about the critical role parents and the entire family play in overcoming a mental health issue in one or more children.

The one thing that really set this topic apart from other topics for our children is the notion of stigma. Encouragingly, we are at a better stage now than ever in the course of history for discussing and embracing this important topic. We hope you find the resources provided useful and share them with friends and family.
