Homework at KCS

Andrea Fanjoy
Homework is a galvanizing topic in education. Recognising the impact homework can have on students and families, KCS strives to have a balanced approach. We see value in establishing a routine with homework and developing students’ abilities to work and manage their time independently. There is also value in students practising basic skills, finishing up some work, and letting parents see their children’s work plus work habits first-hand. Our goal is to make the most of these benefits and minimize the challenges that can ensue if due care is not taken.

To this end, KCS initiated a review of our homework practices in September 2010. The review included feedback from parents, students, and faculty, as well as professional research on the topic. Parents were asked in the spring 2011 KCS Family Satisfaction Survey how satisfied they were with the KCS homework guidelines as well as with their child’s experience completing homework within the guidelines, with minimal or no adult assistance. Faculty were given a comprehensive report of all feedback with detailed guidelines and next steps. Parents were also given an 11-page report that summarized all feedback and guidelines. Faculty will review these guidelines each year and we request that parents also become familiar with the guidelines so they can help us provide an optimal homework experience.

A number of improvements were initiated immediately following the release of the report and more are being launched this school year for students in grades 6 to 8. Parents of these students will learn more about our launch of Edmodo and its online planner shortly. As in 2011, we continue to ask parents in our annual KCS Family Satisfaction Surveys about their satisfaction with our guidelines and with the child’s experience with homework. The results show that most parents continue to be satisfied with our guidelines and their child’s experience. The results also show that opinions on amount of homework are still quite variable. We recognize that the homework experience can differ greatly from one child to the next. As such, please let your child’s teachers know if his/her homework load is too much, too little, too easy, too difficult to complete independently or if it is just right.
