Announcing Julie Hartley as KCS Grade 9 English Teacher

We are excited to announce that Julie Hartley is joining KCS as our founding grade 9 English teacher. Julie brings a wealth of experience in teaching, learning, and creating with English.  Her career includes having taught English and drama at Toronto’s Havergal College as well as Leicester Grammar School in the United Kingdom. Twenty-five years ago, Julie co-founded Centauri Arts with her husband Craig. Since then she has established and led multiple arts and education businesses. She and her team of artists have taught many hundreds of children, youth and adults, including more than 400 teenagers each summer for the past quarter century – young people who travelled from 20 different countries to attend Centauri Summer Arts Camp. Julie has also taught at various colleges and universities as Sessional Lecturer and guest instructor, including University of Waterloo and George Brown College.
Julie earned her Bachelor of Arts in English and Theatre Studies, as well as her Master of Arts in Literature and Cultural Studies, at Warwick University in England. She also earned a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing at the University of British Columbia. Julie has published numerous books, including The Finding Place, Deboning a Dragon, and Practical Approaches to Shakespeare in the Drama Classroom. She also performed a TEDx Talk on The Business of Being an Artist.
The KCS community has already had the benefit of Julie and Centauri Arts’ support of our 2020/21 club program, providing clubs and workshops in creative writing, photography, devised theatre, cartooning, digital art, and filmmaking. Julie and the Centauri Arts’ team of artists will contribute to an inspiring year of learning for our grade 9 founding students, in English class and beyond.
With her husband and daughter, Julie enjoys travel (28 countries and counting), hiking, reading, nature, and conservation efforts.
