A Forest of Reading: Silver Birch Celebration 2017

From The Nameless City, The Nest and Seven Dead Pirates to Worms for Breakfast, Haunted Canada and Safety Stars, the Grade 5 and 6 students celebrated the excellent nominees for the 2017 Silver Birch Award.  Established in 1994, the Silver Birch Award is a reading program developed by the Ontario Library Association and a dedicated group of Librarians (including our own Ms. Cutting and Ms. B) who diligently promote these wonderful books to their students.

After a fantastic launch in early January, KCS students accomplished an amazing feat by reading over 800 books during the Silver Birch campaign!  Inspired by characters from the nominated books, the students arrived at school dressed up in fantastic costumes and displayed beautiful poster promoting their favourite titles.  Along with recognizing the best costumes from each class, special certificates were presented to our outstanding readers who completed all 20 of the nominated books!

With the voting completed earlier in the day, the excitement mounted as the students eagerly waited for the results. Which two books would be voted by KCS students as the top fiction and non-fiction entries of 2017? After a very tight race, the KCS students voted The Blackthorn Key as the top fiction book and Friend or Foe as the best non-fiction book!  Awesome work Grades 5 and 6!  We will wait to see the national winner that will be announced by the OLA later this year.

Thank you to all of our students for another excellent year of Silver Birch. A very special thank you to Ms. Bharadia and Ms. Cutting for leading this fantastic reading initiative including the pouches of keepsake seeds that they presented to each student encouraging them to plant their own “forests of reading!”
