Junior Division Grades 4-6

The foundation has been laid. Now it is time to take it to the next level.

During their time in our Junior Division, your child will discover just how much they are capable of achieving.

They will extend their thinking through project-based learning, small-group workshops, and curriculum-focused overnight trips. They will use their own laptop to research, grow and create. They will compete on teams and perform in concerts. And – of course – they will do it all with respect, manners, and a desire to try their very best.

The tween years are an exciting time for kids. We make their time at school just as exciting.

Grade 4

A transition year filled with new experiences.

The early years and primary grades are all about building a solid foundation across the curriculum. In Grade 4, students solidify that foundation and then start using it to explore more advanced work. They go from writing simple sentences to crafting complex paragraphs with supporting evidence. They go from simply accepting what they have read as fact to asking critical questions about the world around them. And they go from a kid to a more mature and independent young person.

This transition is reflected in all aspects of the school day. Grade 4 students get their own laptop and learn to make integration of technology a regular part of their own work. They get their own locker and start changing into PE clothes for gym class. They can join competitive teams and the school musical. By giving them a wider range of opportunities to make their own choices, we help them grow as individuals. In some ways, this year is a transition year. In Grade 4, we use the supportive and safe approach of the primary years, but with a strong focus on getting our students ready for the increased responsibility and independence of Grade 5.

Grade 5

Stepping into the driver's seat.

Grade 5 is the year when we challenge our students to step up and take full responsibility for themselves. We encourage them to take charge of their learning and their life. We know that they are ready and capable, so all they need is a little support and guidance.

Of course, taking ownership of your studies and staying organized can be challenging for many students, so mistakes happen. But that’s why this is also the year when our kids learn that it’s okay to take a risk and fail. Because that’s when you pick yourself up, learn from the experience, and grow as a person.

Our teachers know that this is a huge year of personal growth, and they are there to coach your child through it. They are passionate about helping their students reach new heights of responsibility, discover their academic potential, and learn to advocate for themselves.

But that doesn’t mean they don’t have fun too! Our Grade 5 classrooms are full of laughter, enthusiasm, and joy. After all, just because you’re growing up doesn’t mean you can’t still be a kid.

Grade 6

Spreading their wings and flying solo.

Grade 6 is the year when our students leave the nest and start flying on their own. By this point, we’ve given them all the tools they need to be successful and self-motivated learners. So this is the time to let them test their skills and get ready for the big world of high school, which is already looming on the horizon.

That’s why there are an awful lot of “firsts” in Grade 6. First year of walking themselves to classes. First year of electives. First year of exams. First school dance. First year when they really and truly stand on their own two feet.

As they navigate this world of increased freedom and choice, we’re there to help them make smart decisions. We develop their independence by providing them with online tools to manage their homework and assignments. We develop their sense of self through leadership and service learning opportunities. We develop their study habits by providing academic coaching to parents and kids. And – most importantly – we help them develop healthy social relationships with their family, their friends, and themselves.

Our job as parents and teachers is to help our kids learn how to look after themselves. This is the year when they make that leap.
